About Tom

Tom is an original New Yorker whose passion for photography began at age 11 when he built his first enlarger using an old bellows camera and a gallon can.

As a college graduate at draft age, he chose to attend Infantry OCS after receiving his draft notice in 1966. He served tours in the United States as well as Vietnam and Korea as an Intelligence Officer and Army Aviator. In 1983 he was assigned to Fort McPherson, Atlanta, and eventually settled in Marietta following military retirement in 1986. It was only in the last few years, with the strong encouragement of people in the art and design field, that he decided to professionally pursue his passion for photography. His first formal show in 2004 consisted of thirty-six images displayed at Neiman Marcus, Atlanta. He also displayed work at Kennesaw State University and in shops in the Atlanta area. Several well known restaurants in Atlanta currently show his work.

As a member of the Atlanta Photography Group (APG), his images were selected in the 2005 Fay Gold Selects juried competition and were displayed at the APG Gallery, Tula Art Center, in Atlanta. In June 2005, the Marietta Daily Journal published a full page article about his return to fine art photography.

Photography is a process to Tom, simple or very technical; it is the brush and paint serving the thought and light that creates the image as on a canvas. Though he has a film based background he has now moved to almost full digital image capture. It took several years, but he now accepts the digital darkroom and what it brings to artistic creativity.

He still believes film is a timeless capture medium and continues to use film when appropriate.  The majority of images in the gallery are from 35mm and medium format negatives, scanned and printed digitally. Newer images are all digital.  He has recently completed a photo essay for publication.
